Next, on the second day, God established the firmament, 1 that is, the solid vault of the sacred Scriptures, for in the Church the Scriptures are understood as the firmament, as it is written: 'And He shall roll up the sky like a scroll.' 2 And He spread waters over this firmament, that is the heavenly people of the angels, who have no labour to look at this firmament, so that reading they hear the word of God. For they look on Him always 3 and love Him. But this same firmament of His law is placed over the weakness of lesser peoples, that looking there they know how to discern between things carnal and spiritual, as between higher and lower waters.
