Clement, the disciple of the Apostles, who was a bishop and a martyr of the Church of Rome after the Apostles, composed some books which in Greek are called 'Anagnorismos', that is 'The Recognition' in which, in the person of the Apostle Peter, a teaching that is very apostolic for the most part is taught, but in some places the teaching of Eunomius is inserted, which can be thought to be nothing but that which Eunomius argued for, asserting that the Son of God was created from nothing. Then finally even that corruption is inserted which claims that the nature of the devil and other demons is not evil because of the choice of the will, but because God produced them as a different and separate type of creature, though in other things it is taught that He gave the faculty of free will to every rational creature. There are not a few of such things inserted in this book, which the ecclesiastical rule does not allow at all. And what then, I ask, shall we think concerning this? That an Apostolic man, indeed almost an Apostle, for he writes these things which they say are of the Apostle, him to whom Paul the Apostle gave witness to, saying: 'With Clement, and others of my helpers, whose names are written in the book of life,' 1 wrote that which is contrary to the book of life? Or rather should it not be believed, as we said above, that perverse men, for the assertion of their own teaching, under the names of holy men, so that they might be more readily believed, inserted these things, which they neither thought nor wrote? The Example of Humility
For Christ is of those who are humble minded, and not of those who lift themselves up over His flock. The sceptre of the greatness of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, although powerful, was humble, as the Holy Spirit spoke regarding Him; for He says: 'O Lord, who has believed what we have heard, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? We have announced it in His presence: As a child, as a root in thirsty ground, without glory, so we saw Him, and He had no form nor beauty; but His form was without eminence, lacking in comparison with the form of men; He is a man of blows and suffering, bearing with weakness: for His face was turned away; He was despised, and not esteemed; He bears our iniquities and our faults, and we judged that He was the cause of His suffering and blows and affliction; but He was wounded for our sins, and bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was on Him, and by His blows we were healed. All of us, like sheep, went astray; each man wandered in his own way; and the Lord gave Him up for our sins, and in the midst of sufferings He does not open His mouth. As a sheep to the slaughter He was brought, and as a lamb dumb before the shearer, so He does not open His mouth. In His humiliation His judgment was taken away. Who shall declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth. For the transgressions of my people He was brought to death. And I will give the wicked for His tomb and the rich for His death, because He did no wrong, nor was guile found in His mouth. And the Lord is pleased to purify him with stripes. If you make an offering for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived seed. And the Lord is pleased to relieve Him of the affliction of His soul, to show Him light, and to shape Him with understanding, the Just One who ministers well to many; and He Himself shall bear their sins. By this He shall inherit many and divide the spoil of the strong, because His soul was delivered to death, and He was reckoned among the transgressors, and He bore the sins of many, and for their sins He was delivered.'' 1 And again He says, 'I am a worm, and no man; a reproach to men, and despised by the people. All who see me have derided me. They have spoken with their lips, they have shaken their heads, saying: He hoped in the Lord, let Him deliver Him, let Him save Him, since He delights in Him.' 2 You see, beloved, what the example is that has been given to us; for if the Lord so humbled Himself, what shall we do who have come under the yoke of His grace through Him? Let us be imitators of those who went about in the skins of goats and sheep 3 proclaiming the coming of Christ; I speak of Elijah, Elisha, and Ezekiel, the Prophets, with those others who gave the same witness. Abraham was especially honoured, and was called the friend of God, and he, regarding the glory of God, humbly declared, 'I am but earth and ash.' 4 And then it is written of Job: 'Job was a righteous man, blameless, truthful, and God-fearing, keeping himself from all evil.' 5 But he accused himself, saying, 'No man is free from defilement, even if his life be but a day.' 6 Moses was called faithful in all God's house, and by use of him God punished Egypt with plagues and tribulations, yet he, so greatly honoured, did not speak proudly, but when the Divine oracle came to him out of the bush, he said, 'Who am I, that you send me? I am a man of feeble voice and a slow tongue.' 7 And again he said, 'I am but as the smoke of a pot.' Obedience And Salvation
You, then, who are at the root of this revolt, make submission to the clergy and be educated to repentance with the bending of the knee of your hearts. Learn to submit yourselves, putting aside proud and overbearing speeches, for it is better for you to be lowly and respected members of the flock of Christ than to be apparently enjoying positions of eminence, but in fact to be cast out of all hope of Him. In the Wisdom of Perfection it says: 'Behold, I will bring out to you a saying of my breath, and I will teach you my word. Because I called and you did not obey and I held out words and you did not attend to them, but made my councils of no effect and were unpersuaded by my corrections, therefore I will laugh at your destruction, and I will rejoice over you when ruin comes upon you and when dismay suddenly overtakes you and your calamity is near like a whirlwind, or when the trials of a seige come to you. For it will be that you call on me and I will not hear you, and the wicked will seek me and they will not find me. For they hated wisdom and they did not choose the fear of the Lord, nor did it please them to heed my counsel, but they mocked my reproofs. Therefore they shall eat the fruits of their own way and they shall be filled with their own impiety. Because they mistreated babes, they shall be slain, and visitation shall destroy the ungodly. But he that hears me shall dwell trusting in hope and shall have rest from all fear of every evil.' 1 Let us, then, be obedient to His all holy and glorious name by which we flee the doom that was pronounced by Wisdom on the godless, and that we may dwell trusting in the most sacred name of His majesty. Receive our counsel and you will have no regrets. For as God lives, as Jesus Christ lives, and the Holy Spirit also, on whom are set the faith and hope of God's elect, so surely the man who in all humility and fitting zeal, not to be repented, keeps the divinely appointed decrees and statues, will be enrolled with honour among the number of those who are saved through Jesus Christ, through whom God is glorified for ever and ever. Sharing In Gifts
How blessed and wonderful are the gifts of God, beloved. Life in immortality, splendour in righteousness, truth in openness, faith in assurance, self-command in holiness, and all these things fall under our awareness. What then of those things prepared for those who endure? The Creator and Father of all worlds, the Most Holy, He alone knows their amount and beauty. Let us therefore strive to be found among the number of those who endure, that we may be partakers in the gifts promised. But how will this be, beloved? If our understanding is fixed in faith toward God; if we seek out the things which are pleasing and acceptable to Him; if we fulfill the things which are in harmony with His blameless will and follow the way of truth, casting off from us all unrighteousness and wickedness, overreaching, strife, both evil conduct and deceit, both gossiping and backbiting, all hatred of God, pride and boasting, vainglory and ambition. For they who do these things are hateful to God; and not only those who do them, but also those who approve of them. For Scripture says, 'But to the sinner God said: Why do you declare my statutes, and take my covenant into your mouth? You hated instruction, and you cast my words behind you. If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and you placed your portion with adulterers. Your mouth has abounded with wickedness, and your tongue has contrived deceit. Seated you spoke evil against your brother; you slandered your own mother's son. These things you have done, and I was silent; you thought, lawless one, that I should be like you. But I will reprove you, and set yourself before your face. Consider these things, you who forget God, lest He rend you like a lion and there be no one to deliver you. A sacrifice of praise will glorify Me, and there is the way by which I will show to him the salvation of God.' 1 This is the way, beloved, in which we find our Saviour, Jesus Christ, the High Priest of all our offerings, the defender and helper of our weakness. By Him we gaze up at the heights of heaven; by Him we see, as in a mirror, His immaculate and perfect face; by Him the eyes of our hearts are opened; by Him our foolish and darkened understanding shoots up afresh toward the light. Declaring the Resurrection
Let us consider, beloved, how the Lord continually proves to us that there shall be a future resurrection, of which He has made the Lord Jesus Christ the first-fruits by raising Him from the dead. Let us behold, beloved, the resurrection which is happening in its proper time. Day and night declare to us a resurrection. The night sleeps, the day arises, the day departs, the night comes. Let us turn to the fruits; how does the sowing of seed take place? The sower goes out and casts it into the ground, and the seed being scattered, which dry and naked fell on the earth, is dissolved. Then out of its dissolution the mighty providence of the Lord raises it up, and from one many arise and put forth fruit. Saint Clement of Rome, Letter to the Corinthians |

Peace and Forgiveness
Ἐπιστολή πρὸς Κορινθίους, Ἅγιος Κλήμης Ῥώμης | You know well the Sacred Scriptures, beloved, and you have studied the words of God. We write, then, to remind you. For Moses having gone up the mountain and having spent forty days and forty nights in fasting and humility, God said to him: 'Go down quickly from here, for your own people have broken the law, those whom you brought out of Egypt, they have quickly left the way I commanded them and they have made for themselves idols.'1 And then the Lord said to him, ' I have seen this people and they are stiff necked, allow me to destroy them and I will wipe out their name from beneath heaven and make you into a great nation and a wonder, for more than they are.'2 And Moses said, ' Let it not be, Lord. Forgive the people the sin or else wipe me also from the book of the living.'3 O great love, O peerless perfection. A servant speaking boldly to his Lord and asking for forgiveness for many, or else that he be destroyed along with those worthy to be. Is there then a noble man among you, one who is compassionate, one who is overflowing with love? Let him say, 'If on account of me there is discord and strife and division, I shall withdraw, I will go away anywhere you wish, and I will do what makes peace among the little flock of Christ and their appointed elders.' He who does this gains great fame in Christ and he will be received in every place, for the earth is the Lord's and everything in it. This is to maintain citizenship of God which is not to repented, and it has been done and is being done. Even among the gentiles we may recall tales of it. Many kings and leaders in times of plague have given themselves up to death that they might save their people by the shedding of their own blood, many have imposed exile on themselves that they quell civil strife. And we know that many among us have handed themselves over to be bound in chains that others be free, and many have given themselves to slavery and given to others the money thereby gained that they may eat.
