Calling The Righteous

Anselmus Laudunensis, Enarrationes In Matthaeum, Caput IX

I did not come into the world to call the righteous... 1

He did not come into the world to call those falsely righteous, who gloried in their righteousness, like the Pharisees, who ignored the righteousness of God and wished to establish their own, not being subject to the righteousness of God, 2 but those who recognised themselves to be sinners, and who submitted their necks to the grace of God. For while the righteous are wise in their own eyes, they cannot be converted to the faith, but after they recognise their own sins, as sinners and not as righteous men, they can be called to the faith.
