Wealth And Salvation

And Jesus looking around said to His disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God.' And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus again answering, said to them, 'Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches, to enter into the kingdom of God.' 1

Consider the explanation, because those who He first spoke of having wealth He now expounds in speaking of those who trust in riches, hence the Gloss: 'Those who are burdened with an abundance of riches,' because it is manifest that they scorn the seeking of another life. It is one thing to have wealth and another thing to love it. Many have riches and do not love them, many do not have them and love them, and others have them and love them, but others rejoice in not having them and in not loving them, who are more secure, who are able to say with the Apostle, 'The world is crucified to me and I to the world.' And Solomon says in Ecclesiastes, 'He who loves riches shall gain no fruit from them, for they are vain.' 2 For the Lord Himself explains these words to the astonished disciples, saying, 'Children, how difficult it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God.' In the first letter to Timothy, 'Those who wish to be rich, they fall into temptation and in the trap of the devil,' and the temptations are many and harmful, and they drag down the soul into ruin and damnation. Therefore in the Psalm, 'If riches abound, do not set your heart on them.' Likewise the Apostle says, 'Warn the rich not to think too highly, nor to hope in the security of riches,' 3 for it is difficult for those who hope in riches to enter the kingdom of heaven.
