Demons And The Way

Sanctus Petrus Chrysologus, Sermo XVI, De Duobus Daemoniacis.

And when He had come across the water into the country of the Gerasens, there met Him two men who were possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly savage, so that no one could pass along that way. 1

Two men possessed by demons met Him, and they were so very savage that no one was able to pass along that road. You see that the demons had closed the road to those who were coming to Christ, denying them access. For this is the care of demons, that men should be unable to find the way back to God. In no other way can they possess men, unless by leading them away from fellowship with their Creator. 'So that no one could pass along that way.' This is why Christ became 'the Way.' 'So that no one could pass along that way.' That one, not this one. 'I am the Way,' 2 He says, so that the power of demons may not prevail in impeding those coming to the way through the Way, to God through God. It is not possible to come to God except through God.

Saint Peter Chrysologus, from Sermon 16, On The Two Demoniacs
