Kαὶ ἀλέκτωρ ἐμπεριπατῶν θηλείαις εὔψυχος... Ὁ ὑπὲρ ἁμαρτιῶν προσενεχθεὶς, καὶ ἐν ὕψει βαίνων, ἔχει ἐφεπομένην αὐτῷ τὴν ἀγέλην. Ὅταν γὰρ ὑψωθῶ, φησὶ, πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν.” Ὁ ἀλεκτριὼν διδασκάλου πρόσωπον φέρει, ὃς τὸν λόγον σπείρων ἐν ταῖς ψυχαῖς, ἰσχυρῶς ἐστι προσαγγέλλων τὸ φῶς. Μετανοεῖτε· ἤγγικε γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν. Οὗτος ἦν ὁ ἀπ' ἀρχῆς διυπνίζων τὰς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ τὴν ἡμέραν τῆς ἐνσάρκου αὐτοῦ παρουσίας διὰ πολλῶν προμηνύων· καὶ σκότος ἐκθλίβων, καὶ τὸ φῶς αἰώνιον πᾶσι φανερῶς ὑποδεικνύων. Ἐμπεριπατῶν ἐν θηλείαις εὐψύχως, τουτέστιν ἐν ταῖς Ἐκκλησίαις, εὐψύχως καὶ γενναίως, ὥς φησιν· Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ μεθ' ὑμῶν εἰμι πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἕως τῆς συντελείας τοῦ αἰῶνος. And the cockerel stout of heart walks among the hens... 1 He who has been offered for our sins, coming to the heights has a flock following Him, 'For when I am lifted up, all shall be drawn to me.' 2 The cockerel here bears the person of the teacher, who sows the word in souls, who with a loud voice announces the light of the dawn. 'Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 3 This one from the beginning has roused the hearts of men from sleep, and in many ways He foretells the day of the incarnation of His presence. He dispells the darkness, and openly reveals the eternal light to everyone.
