Calling And Healing

Ut mederer contritis corde misit me.

Hearing this, Jesus said to them, 'Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.' 1

Here He restrains murmuring with a word, 'Those who are healthy have no need...' the truly healthy, or those who think themselves to be healthy. Those who are healthy do not lack, those who think themselves healthy do not seek, unless perhaps some sort of preservative medicine, but He speaks of purgation.

But they who are sick...

Therefore it is said, 'The pharmacist makes sweet substances and ointments for curing.' 2 'Coming to him he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and he led him to an inn and took care of him.' 3 'He sent me that I might heal the contrite in heart.' 4

For I did not come...

He concludes here with the reason of His coming, saying that no man is called unless he is at a distance, one who yet is bound up with the mass of the damned. It is the righteous man who is not distant. 'She called out to the citadel and to the city walls.' 5 'Those He foreknew, conformed to be images of His son, He called these, and those He called He justified, and those He justified He glorified.' 6
