The Appearance Of The Saviour

Καὶ ἰδοὺ φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα· ἀκούετε αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἁκούσαντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα.  Ἡ μὲν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ Πατρὸς φωνὴ καλή τε καὶ ἀξιάγαστος· ἀκράτῳ δὲ ἥδη κατεχόμενοι δείματι πίπτουσιν οἱ μαθηταὶ, ἵνα δὴ πάλιν καὶ διὰ τούτου μάθωμεν, ὡς ἀναγκαιοτάτη τοῖς ἐπὶ γῆς ἡ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ἀναπεφανται μεσιτεία, νοουμένη δηλαδὴ κατὰ τὸν τῆς ἐνανθρωπήσεως τρὸπον· εἰ μὴ γὰρ γέγονε καθ' ἡμᾶς, τίς ἂν ἡμῶν ἤνεγκεν ἄνω προσβάλλοντα Θεὸν, καὶ τὴν ἄφατον αὐτοῦ δόξαν οὐδενὶ τάχα τῶν γεννητῶν φορητὴν ἐμφαίνοντα; Φῶς γὰρ οἰκεῖν αὐτὸν ἀρπόσιτον καὶ ὁ μακάριος ἔφησε Παῦλος.  Ἅγιος Κύριλλος Ἀλεξανδρείας, Ἐξὴγησις Εἰς Τὸ Κατὰ Ματθαιον Εὐάγγελιον Source:  Migne PG 72.425c

And now, there was a voice which said to them out of the cloud: 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, listen to him.' The disciples, when they heard it, fell on their faces, overcome with fear. 1 Certainly the voice of the Father is good and worthy of love, but struck with utter fear the disciples fell, that again by this we might learn how especially necessary it was that to those of the earth the appearance of the Savior was mediated, understood according to the manner of his incarnation. For unless He had been made similar to us, who would have been able to grasp Him who from on high descended, and who would be able to bear the appearance of His ineffable glory?
