Super quem videris Spiritum descendentem et manentem super eum, hic est qui baptizat. Notabilitur tanguntur hic tria de Spiritu sancto, scilicet quia apparet, quia descendit, et quia manet. On whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, this is He who baptises... 1 This notably touches on three things of the Holy Spirit, that is, He appears, He descends, and He remains. His appearance is noted in the speaking about vision, when it is said: 'On whom you see.' The descent, when it continues, 'The Spirit descending.' His remaining, when it continues: 'And remaining'. The Spirit descends for life-giving grace, He appears in the showing of good works, He remains in the perseverance and continuation of them. These same things of the Holy Spirit may be noted in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. The descent when it is said: 'And suddenly there was a sound from heaven, as the coming of a great wind.' The appearance when it is said: 'And there appeared to them separate tongues like fire.'
