The Coming Of Salvation

Who shall give from Sion salvation to Israel? 1

'He shall come from Sion who shall liberate and He shall turn aside the impiety of Jacob.' 2 If the Saviour comes from Sion, but He has come forth and come from the Father, this Sion is used as a figure of the Father. And he announces salvation not only to those in the time of Hezekiah but also to those in the long time after, the coming of the salvation of our Savour. For when all have declined, it is neccessary that He should come who can forgive sins and save. And he says 'from Sion' because He is from the seed of Israel, and because from Sion He shall come who is coming, as it is written. 'When the Lord turns aside the captivity of His people.' Which captivity is a voluntary turning from knowledge and virtue to ignorance and wickedness. 'Jacob shall exult and Israel rejoice.' He exults who has been made passionless in actions, he rejoices who has been made worthy of contemplative knowledge.

Origen, Selecta On the Psalms, from Psalm 13

2 Isaiah 59.20
