Καὶ γράφοντα πολλάκις αἰσχύνομαι, καὶ πράττονατα οὐ καλῶς ἀποστρέφομαι· καὶ ἀπορῶ τί σοι ἀποκριθῶ, οὐχ ὡς λειπόμενος σαφηνείας, ἀλλὰ φειδόμενος τῆς ἀκοῆς σου, ὡς ἀναξίας. Οὐ γὰρ κυσὶ διδόναι τὰ ἅγια ἐπετράπημεν. Εἰ δὲ ἀπολυττήσειας, καὶ λέξω τὰ αἰτηθέντα, καὶ δείξω τὸ ἀπιστούμενον ἀναμφίβολον. Οὐδὲ γὰρ λημῶν ὀφθαλμὸς τῷ τοῦ ἡλίου δίσκῳ ἐνατενίσαι δύναται, καὶ ἀτενίζων ματαίως ἠσχόληται· οὐδε ῥυπῶσα διάνοια, θηρεῦσαι τι τῶν ἁγίων εἰς ὄφελος δύναται. I often blush over writing, as I turn away from deeds poorly done, and though I could certainly could reply to you, my soul is torn in two.
