After The Voice

Καὶ ἐν τῶ γενέσθαι τὴν φωνὴν, εὑρέθη Ἰησοῦς μόνος. Ἡ δὲ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης φωνὴ τάχα μὲν Μωυσεῖ καὶ Ἡλίᾳ λέγει· Οὗτός ἐστι· τάχα δὲ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς. Ἧς ἀκούσαντες, καὶ ταύτην τὴν δόξαν μὴ φέροντες, ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ταπεινωθέντες ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ Θεοῦ, σφόδρα φοβηθέντες, εἰδότες τὸ λεχθὲν πρὸς Μωῦσῆν· Οὐ γὰρ ὄψεται ἄνβρωπος τὸ πρόσωπόν μου, καὶ ζήσεται. Ἐπάραντες δὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, μόνον εἶδον τὸν Ἰησοῦν. Ἔν γὰρ, οἶμαι, γέγονε Μωσῆς ὁ νόμος, καὶ Ἡλίας ἡ προφητεία, Ἰησοῦ τῷ Εὐαγγελίῳ. Καὶ οὐχ ὥσπερ ἦσαν πρότερον τρεῖς μεμενήκασι. Ταῦτα δέ μοι νόει μυστικώτερον. Πρὸς γὰρ τὸ ὑψηλὸν τοῦ γράμματος βούλημα, Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἠλίας ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ, καὶ συλλαλήσαντες τῷ Ἰησοῦ, ἀπεληλύθασιν ὅθεν ἐληλύθεισαν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ βλέπεται ὁ Ἰησοὺς λεχθῆναι τὰ τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ· ἐβλάβησαν γὰρ ἄν οἱ ἀκούοντες, καὶ μάλιστα οἱ ὄχλοι, τὸν οὕτω δεδοξασμένον θεωροῦντες σταυρούμενον. Οὐ τοίνυν φθονήσαντες ἔκρυψαν, ἀλλ' ὡς φοβηθέντες μὴ ἀπιστηθῶσι. Τότε οὖν ἀπήγγειλαν, μετὰ τὴν ἀνάληψιν, μετὰ τὴν τοῦ Πνεύματος παρουσίαν. Ὅτε γὰρ ἐπλήσθησαν παῤῥησίας, καὶ Πνεύματος ἠξιώθησαν, καὶ τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν σημείων εἶχον φωνὴν συνηγοροῦσαν αὐτοῖς, καὶ παντα ὅσα ἔλεγον, εὐπαράδεκτα ἦν. And after the voice Jesus was found alone. 1 And the voice from the cloud may have said to Moses and Elijah: 'This is... 'and perhaps even to the disciples. Which hearing, even this glory they were not able to bear, but they fell on their faces, 'humbled beneath the power of the hand of God,' 2 utterly in fear since they knew that it had been said to Moses: 'No man shall look upon my face and live.' 3 And now with their eyes lowered they saw only Jesus. For then, I think, that Moses, or the Law, and Elijah, or Prophecy, was one with the Gospel of Jesus. They were not as they were before, remaining three. And this seems to me to be a greater mystery. For in the highest sense of the letter, Moses and Elijah were seen in glory, and when they had spoken with Jesus, they went away whence they had come. For Jesus is not seen to have spoken of the things of His glory, for that would have distressed the hearers, especially the crowds, when they came to see the glorified crucified. He did not, then, conceal because He begrudged them it, but fearing lest they be faithless. When they preached, it was after the Ascension, after the coming of the Holy Spirit. For then they were filled with confidence and made worthy of the Spirit, and they had with them the voice of the miracles speaking with them, and as much as they said, it was accepted without difficulty.
