The World's Hate

Me autem odit mundus Mundus, inquit, me odit. Odivit eum sicut invidus, quia Christus magnus erat in mundo; odivit eum sciut adversarius, quia Christus erat contrarius mundo; odivit eum sicut mali conscius, quia Christus erat alienus a mundo. The world hates me. 1 The world, He says, hates me. It hated Him as a matter of envy, because Christ was great in the world, and it hated Him as an adversary, because Christ was opposed to the world, and it hated Him because of consciousness of evil, because Christ did not belong to the world. Therefore Christ was reputed to be great and so the world hated him, in the fifteenth chapter of John, 'If I had not performed these works among them, which no other has done, they would not have sin. But now they see and they hate me and my father.' 2 Likewise Christ was opposed to the world and therefore the world hated him, for which reason He says here, 'The world hates me.' Likewise, Christ did not belong to the world, and therefore the world was suspicious of of Him, because of which the world hated Him. In the fifteenth chapter of John, 'If you were from the world, the world would love you as its own.' but now, 'as you are not from the world, because of this the world hates you.'
