Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡ γένεσις οὕτως ἦν. μνηστευθείσης τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Μαρίας τῷ Ἰωσήφ, πρὶν ἢ συνελθεῖν αὐτοὺς εὑρέθη ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχουσα ἐκ πνεύματος ἁγίου. Μετὰ τὴν μνηστείαν συνέλαβεν, ἵνα δόξῃ ἐξ αὐτοῦ κεκυηκέναι· καὶ ἵνα ἐξ αὐτοῦ γενεαλογηθῇ, καὶ σχᾐ καὶ κηδεμόνα ἐν ταῖς ἐπινουλαῖς.. And this was the manner of Christ’s birth. His mother Mary being espoused to Joseph, before they had come together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 1   After the betrothal she conceived that it seem that she conceived from him, and that the lineage be from him, and that she have a helper against plots.
