Adding And Taking Away

You shall not add to it, nor take anything away. 1

Men who sin generally do so for two causes, either going beyond the commandments, or by being rid of them. For when we live apart from knowlege, not knowing the standards of righteousness, we are deceived, and when we go beyond the commandments, we act in the delusion that we do better, falling away from what has been set before us.

Origen, On Deuteronomy, Fragment

1 Deut 12.32
