Healing The Blind And The Mute

And when He had come to the house they brought the blind men to Him, and He said to them, 'Do you believe that I can do this?' They said to Him, 'Yes, Lord.' Then the Lord, knowing their faith, touched their eyes and they were opened. 1

Mystically the house in which they are illuminated is the Church, in which we perceive the light of the vision of the Lord through faith, which light we lost through the sin of our first parents. And that the Lord questions these blind men is not because He was ignorant of how much they believed, but He questioned them for this, that He who gives the reward might exhibit our faith in prayer, so what He has prepared might be given by waiting grace, which we should seek of our own free will. Then Jesus warned those who were illuminated not to proclaim it but they went and declared it across the whole land. It is possible that the Lord knew that they would declare it, but He commanded them on account of humility, that flees all the boasts of glory. They, however, because of they wonder of what was done were not able to do what was right. Then with them going out, they brought to Him a mute who had a demon. And He cast out the demon and the mute spoke. They who brought this man to Him are best understood as holy preachers who present for healing the human race, not in one place, but in one faith, in the sight of God, and not only the body but the soul. As the two blind men signified all the human race, so with this mute is the confession of true faith, for having a demon he could not open his mouth in praise of God his creator, while he worshiped false idols for God, but with the Lord coming in the flesh, the demon is cast out, and the mute speaks.
