Names Of Mary

And now to the third matter, which pertains to the knowledge of the famous name. Illuminatress she is, and Star of the Sea, and Lady, and Bitter Sea, whence the interpretation of Mary is not of little meaning. The first of the names pertains to the glory of the blessedness of the saints, the second to compassion in this sea of storms, the third to surpassing excellence among the righteous, and the fourth to the forgiveness of all penitent sinners. She indeed illuminates the saints in glory, and to those tossed about in the storms of trials and in doubts she is a guide, and among all the righteous who merit grace, she is the Lady. And she is for the propitiation of the penitent and sorrowful. She is clothed with the sun, that she shine, and she stands as a sign in heaven, to which those amid the waves may hold to steer the ship of the heart. She is crowned with stars, because she possess the brightness of the virtue of all the saints, like she who is first and the Lady. 1 She cries out in birth, 2 that to all crying out in bitterness of heart, she conform to the like state of compassion. 3 As she who conceives, as she who is approaching the time of birth, sorrowfully crying our in her pains, so we are made. By your face, O Lord, we conceive, and as giving birth, even we bring forth the spirit of salvation. She is the dawn arising, from which rises the son of righteousness, and healing is in its wings. 4 And therefore she is Illuminatress. She is the star that arose from Jacob 5 and so the Star of the Sea. She is the Queen who stands in a diversity of virtues, in vestments of gold, 6 with the splendor of the deity coming upon her, and therefore she is the Lady. And she is the mercy seat on which the Lord is propitiated for sinners. 7 And therefore she is the Bitter Sea.
