And going in He said to them, 'What is this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping,' and they laughed at Him. But He sent them all out, and taking the child’s father and mother and those with Him, He went in to where the child lay. Then He took hold of the child's hand and said to her, 'Talitha, cumi,' which means, 'Girl, I say to you, rise up.' And the girl stood up immediately, and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And they were beside themselves with wonder. And He charged them to let nobody hear of it and told them to give her something to eat. 1 The members of the synagogue leader's household thought Christ was one of the teachers, because of which they begged Him to come and pray over the girl, and because she was dead they thought there was nothing else to be done. But He encouraged the father, saying, 'Only believe.' He did not allow anyone else to accompany Him but only three disciples, because Jesus was humble and did not wish to make a scene. When He said, 'She is not dead but sleeping,' they laughed, and thus later could not say that He was out of His mind and there was no miracle of raising her up, but they bore witness against themselves, because He did indeed raise the dead girl, He who they had derided when He said that the girl was not dead but sleeping. He took her hand and imbued power in her. And they gave her to eat so that the resurrection would be proved, for truly this was not a matter of mere appearances.
