Job And The Resurrection

For if a man goes down to hell, he shall not rise again, nor shall he return anymore to his own house, nor shall he know where his place is. 1

Some say that Job spoke like this because he does not admit the resurrection. First he reveals the fragility of men and then that once a man has died he does not return to this corruptible life, nor to his customary occupations. The words, 'He does not rise from hell,' must be connected with 'he does not return to his own house,' as if he had said, 'Certainly he may revive, but he does not return to his own house.' This is a possible interpretation, yet the former may be more true, that the righteous Job was ignorant of the resurrection of the dead and therefore he is more worthy of admiration that, not even hoping for such a thing, he showed such virtue in everything.
